WATERBERG PLATEAU PARK

Picture THE PLACE :
The Waterberg Plateau is one of the most spectacular features of the northern region. Towering some 200 metres above the surrounding landscape, the plateau with its sheer cliffs and fascinating rock formations is the habitat of several rare game species and Namibia's only breeding colony of Cape vulture.

Although the park is a popular stopover for those travelling to the Etosha National Park or to the Caprivi Strip and Kaudum, visitors planning to spend a few days here will not be disappointed.

Guided tours: Because of the deep, soft sand on the plateau, visitors are not permitted to explore the area in their own vehicles. Guided tours in custom-built four-wheel drive vehicles are undertaken by conservation officials.
Depending on demand, tours are conducted in the early morning or late afternoon, and a visit to the thoughtfully designed game-viewing hides is often a highlight of the tour. Remember to take warm clothing as it can be chilly on the open vehicles.

WHERE :
Take the signposted turnoff to the park about 20 km south of Otjiwarongo on the Bl and continue for 19 km along the C22. Ignore the C30 which branches off to the right and continue for a further 22 km before turning onto the B2512. The turnoff to the park is reached after 18 km and the park office is 1 km further on. Following heavy rains the last 18 km of the road to the park can become impassable. Motorists are advised to telephone the park office (0651) 31911 to check on the condition of the road before setting off.

ACCOMMODATION :
Accommodation at the Bernabe de la Bat Rest Camp ranges from two-bedded tourisettes to one- and two-bedroomed bungalows sleeping three and five people respectively. Each bungalow has a kitchen equipped with a hot plate, kettle and refridgerator, but no crockery, cutlery or cooking utensils. There is also a shower, wash basin and toilet. Bedding, soap and towels are provided. Each bungalow has its own outside fireplace.
The grassy camp site laid out amongst tall Acacia trees will appeal to those seeking less sophisticated accommodation.
Amenities include communal ablutions and a field kitchen.

FACILITIES :
Facilities at the Bernabe de la Bat Rest Camp include a restaurant, kiosk which is open outside restaurant hours and a swimming pool at the Rasthaus complex. Adjacent to the reception office is a shop which stocks groceries, meat, liquor, wood and souvenirs.
