This page is an information
source for environmental and data management issues in
Namibia
. It contains information on
data collected by institutions and individuals in the environmental-related
monitoring fields.
Increasingly large amounts of scientific and technical data are being created
and saved in digital and non-digital data storage systems. One the objective of
the Environmental Information Systems (EIS) Unit at DEA is to design and
implement a national environmental metadata in
Namibia
. The Unit has collated
metadata for different datasets from various institutions and individuals
involved in environmental-related monitoring. The metadata are presented below.
The list will be updated as often as new metadata are received.
What is Metadata?
Metadata are data
about data. It is a way of documenting information that characterizes datasets.
Metadata are used to provide documentation for data products. In essence,
metadata answer who, what, when, where, why,
and how about every facet of the data that are being documented.
Why bother with metadata?
Our
Metadata base which is
accessible through the internet helps publicize and support the data you or your
organization has produced. Metadata helps people who use both spatial and
non-spatial data find the data they need and determine how best to use it. Lack
of knowledge about other organization’s data can easily lead to unnecessary
duplication of effort.
