Abstract:
Okatumba Wildlife is involved in wildlife/game monitoring and management for conservancies. This data set contains information on game that is found in the conservancies around the Okatumba in the Gobabis district, mostly in farm de Hoof, Omitara and Okatumba areas.

The data set covers the extent of 8 Conservancies (Seeis; Auas-Oanob; Namatanya; Khomas Hockland; Richters; Black Nossob; Dorbabis; Okavi). The game monitored include: 
  • Weissschwanz-Gnu (Connochaetes gnou)
  • Streifengnu (Connochaetes taurinus)
  • Steppenzebra (Equus burchelli)
  • Bergzebra (Equus zebra hartmannae)
  • Blesbock (Damaliscus dorcas phillipsi)
  • Impala (Aepyceros melampus melampus)
  • Eland (Taurotragus oryx)
  • Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis)
  • Pferdeantilope (Hippotragus equinus)
     
  • Rappenantilope (Hippotragus niger)
  • Tsessebe (Damaliscus lunatus)
  • Wasserbock (Kobus ellipsiprymnus)
  • Spitzmaulnashorn (Diceros bicornis)
  • Breitmaulnashorn (Ceratotherium simum)

 

The data is produced/collected together MSc, PhD and intern students form Berlin University (Germany), Newcastle University (England), Polytechnic of Namibia. As well as in conjunction with IUCN-RSA and Tanzania cheetah working group, Large carnivore Management association of Namibia LCMAN and the CBNRM  programme of the DEA.

Sampling methods employed are "distance sampling in game counting, the data is stored in Excel and Access databases in addition to ArcView shape files.

Purpose:
This data is used as planning tool for planning tool for sustainable utilization of natural resources in the conservancies. Further, the data play an important role in compiling guidelines for game monitoring and management.
