Description:

Abstract:

Commercial catch data for fish in the entire Namibian coast. This data set also contain information on resource harvesting. The frequency at which the data is collected varies from fish species, depending on the nature of the fish in concern. For example hake is assessed on a monthly bases whereas pilchard is assessed on a weekly base.

The accuracy of the data is seen as in average in the range of about 100m. The catch is recorded in tones and effort in hours taken. The average for the long past years is used as a threshold against which recommendation are made.

The data are sampled by methods of bottom trawl from where the catch in tones and effort in hours are calculated. This data is linked to UN convention on the law of the sea.

Purpose:

The data is used primarily in making management recommendation for commercial fish in the Namibian coast.

Most of this data has been published over the years. Reports are available from the Ministry's library in Swakopmund.
