Abstract:

The cereal production data sets contain information on the national cereal supply and demand forecast. This includes food use and non-food uses forecasted closing stock. This data is produced in tables per region in communal areas mostly. The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Rural Development which is closely working together with the communal farmers, and the Ministry's local staff assess and estimate the annual and seasonal production.

The data covers all communal areas in the Northern Regions (Ohangwena, Oshikoto, Omusati and Oshana) in principal. In collecting and analyzing the data the MAWRD works very closely with the Namibia Agronomic Board. The Namibia Agronomic Board is however more active in commercial land/farms.

Units of measurements for the data is kg/ha for all cereals. Th sampling and analysis methods employed are mainly the "yield forecasting are measurement". The MAWRD defined a threshold for cereal production to be a 100 000 tons. Cereal production below the threshold is seen to be a low production whereas above is satisfactory to very good.  

Purpose:

The data provides decision makers with information as how to much cereal (including millet and sorghum) has been produced. This information is further used to assess/estimate the annual marketing of cereal. This data is also used in defining drought year period in the country per year.
