Abstract:

DRFN initiated an ongoing monitoring programme in 1985 in which the degree of leaf growth is measured at monthly intervals on 11 male and 10 female Welwitschia mirabilis plants. By comparison these data with other environmental data (e.g. annual climate parameter & season), it should be possible to identify and characterize those factors that influence plant growth, reproduction, and survival. Growth is measured on monthly, flowering is on annual bases. The study site is situated 14km SE of Gobabeb. GPS readings: 23.38S ; 15.10E

Purpose:

1. To identify and characterize factors that influence growth, reproduction an survival of a perennial desert plant. 
2. To relate the above factors to long-term desert processes, with predictive or indicator value. 
3. To demonstrate how a plant can be used to reflect temporal and spatial variability in environmental conditions
