Description:
Abstract:
Annual monitoring of three species of spider in the Kuiseb river to reveal how their populations relate to different aspects of the environment, namely food (mainly tenebrionids and ants), and substrate instability e.g. in sand storms or by livestock trampling. Long-term monitoring and modeling demonstrates how these factors affect clusters of spiders and how clusters develop, shift, and decline over generation. The three species monitored are: 1. Leucorchestric arenicola (white lady) 2. Seothyra (spoor spider) 3. Arridna (corolla mathematical spider)
Purpose:
To help understand population dynamics of predators and test their potential as bioindicators. To help recognize the implications of different strategies used by similar animals in the arid region.
Supplemental_Information: The monitoring of these spiders in the Kuiseb River catchment is ongoing.
