Description:
Abstract:
The Kuiseb River ecosystem has been studied from biophysical, ecological and socio-economic perspective. Since 1963 floods and groundwater levels have been monitored and on several occasions since 1976, aerial photographs were taken. The effect of changes, natural as well as human induced, on vegetation and ultimately wild and domestic animals are recorded.
Purpose:
1. To monitor River floods and their effects on the productivity of this linear oasis
2. To monitor and evaluate the effects of human activities on the River ecosystem
3. To demonstrate the relationships between remote water sources, local resource availability and its utilization to the resource users as well as to environmental students.
Supplemental_Information:
The monitoring of river floods is ongoing. The data is forwarded to the Department of Water Affairs of the Ministry of Agricultural, Water and Rural development on an annual base, where they are further used in Kuiseb River management cases.
