Abstract:

Long-term data on rural human populations assist the interpretation of the relationship between rural human communities, their natural environment, and the utilization of natural resources. The DRFN has facilitated the gathering of baseline data on human demography and the use of natural resources in several rural areas, including the Topnaar community in the Namib. Information on village populations and migration patterns as well as their sources and use of water and of other resources, such as !Nara products and livestock, are being incorporated into this monitoring programme.

Purpose:

1. To facilitate sustainable resource management of the rural Topnaar Community 
2. To facilitate good neighborliness and effective transfer of information between the community and the GTRC 
3.To provide opportunities for environmental training to members of the Topnaar community

Supplemental_Information:

This information is being compared to the concurrent data on environmental indicators, such as vegetation, termites, tenebriodins and soil characteristics. The later, in turn, are compared to the Namib long-term ecological research data. The people can thereby develop an understanding of the interactions they have with their environment and sustainable recourses management. These studies remain ongoing. The reports in regard are available at the DRFN library in Windhoek and at GTRC library at Gobabeb.
