Abstract:

The DRFN has monitored Namib dune dynamics continuously since 1970. This serves to reveal long-term geomorphologic and other environmental processes that affect or are affected by changes in dune configuration. For instance, it has been suggested that the extraordinary high diversity of tenebrionid beetles in the Namib Desert can be explained by the mobility and changing configurations of sand dunes.Namib dune dynamic. Measuring/observing movement of dunes due to wind speed directions. Data also provide information regarding potential changes in biodiversity and microhabitats. Study site: 3km SW of Gobabeb center, 369 alt. 23.33.571S; 15.01.427E. This monitoring programme is ongoing.

Purpose:

To provide information leading to understanding the geomorphologic processes of Namib dune movements as an important example of desert ground processes. To relate ecological processes, such as micro-habitats and biodiversity, to geomorphologic processes.
