Description:

Abstract:

Rainfall index is one the four national-level indicators of desertification in Namibia.  The index is based on rainfall records from the Namibian Weather Bureau that has been corrected by DEA for MAWRD (Agmet 2000). The long term median for each rainfall station and the coefficient of the variance were used to interpolate a median and coefficient of variance map of Namibia. Annual rainfall maps were the  produced by interpolating the total rainfall for each rainfall station.

The index is calculated by the following formula:
Rainfall Index (year x) = Annual total rainfall (year x) - long term mean)/coefficient of variance

The following threshold values are used.
Very high:    >=-2cv
High:            >=-2cv and <=-2cv
Moderate:    >=-1cv and <=1cv
Low:            >=1cv and <2cv
Very low:    >=2cv

Purpose:

To provide monitoring information used to monitor desertification at the national level.
