This
is a national level desertification indicator. The population density was
calculated based on the
national census carried out 1991 (Bureau of Statistics, 1994). The
population figures are presented based on enumeration areas, ranging from a
size of <1km2 to 20 000km2 with an average size of 390 km2. The
population pressure, percentage of population depending on firewood and
agriculture together with the dependable growing period, i.e. growing period
length to be equalled or exceeded in 3 years out of 4 were calculated for
each grid cell. Threshold values for the index are presented in the table
below.

To
compensate for the growth rate since the 1991 census an annual population
growth rate of 3,3% was assumed for the entire time series.
