Description:
Abstract:

This is a national level desertification indicator. The population density was calculated based on the national census carried out 1991 (Bureau of Statistics, 1994). The population figures are presented based on enumeration areas, ranging from a size of <1km2 to 20 000km2 with an average size of 390 km2. The population pressure, percentage of population depending on firewood and agriculture together with the dependable growing period, i.e. growing period length to be equalled or exceeded in 3 years out of 4 were calculated for each grid cell. Threshold values for the index are presented in the table below.

High pressure

PD>0.5/km2
AD > 20%
FW >40%

To compensate for the growth rate since the 1991 census an annual population growth rate of 3,3% was assumed for the entire time series.

Purpose:
Data is used on national level descision making on desertification monitoring.
Supplemental_Information:
To obtain the GIS data, please call or preferably send an e-mail to the distributor. Digital form of data is available as Idrisi files or ArcView shape files. Technical prerequisites for using data: Idrisi 32 and as ArcView spatial analyst Annual publications on this data and other desertification monitored indicators are available from the DRFN library. No maps are produced for distribution.
