ID notes: See also: Water: Borehole water points and Water: Boreholes and wells with pumps

Data compiled by EPP from a number of sources on boreholes and wells in the north-central region and the

immediate surrounding area -- with and without information on pumps. Sources include: DWA, WSSPOR:DRWS,

NNEP, NOLIDEP, Parkman Namibia, EEI, Interconsult. Data collected by these sources over the years may be

geographical (where the borehole or well is), physical (yield and depth of water), chemical (quality of the water),

civil (specifications of the fittings) or socio-economic (number of animals and people they supply). The quality of

the records are variable.

INFORMATION ON FIELDS

ID

This is the ID number generated by MS Access based on latitude, longitude and borehole number.

TOPO

The number of the 1:50,000 topo sheet on which the well or borehole is found

WELL

This is the well number assigned by DWA for each hole drilled. The combination of the well and topo numbers is

unique (according to DWA).

#WELLS

This is the number of wells (usually hand-dug) in a cluster for which only one co-ordinate position was given.

TOPOWELL

A combination of the topo and well numbers (and is therefore unique). Some of these may be followed by a letter

of the alphabet. This indicates that the first hole may have collapsed, been dry, etc.

BHNO

This is the borehole number that is assigned to each borehole when drilled. Although originally intended to be

unique, they are not necessarily.

LAT

Latitudinal position in decimal degrees south of the equator (and therefore negative).

LONG

Longitudinal position in decimal degrees east of Greenwich.

LREF

A mix of codes given by drillers and consultants.

TYPE

Where possible, the water source type has been identified as:

B = borehole

F = fountain / fontein

N = ndunga = deep unlined well

O = omafima = shallow open well

P = borrow pit

S = spring

SH = sinkhole

W = well

WA = artesian well

WB = brick well (lined, usually deep covered)

WHD = hand-dug wells

WL = lined well

WR = ring well (lined, usually deep and covered)

WS = shallow well
