What is Environmental Education?
Environmental Education is the process of understanding, generating and
disseminating environmental information to individuals, and communities in order
to acquire the knowledge, skills, experience and the determination to attain a
sound ecological and socio-economical future.
The Mission of the EEIS Unit is
to:
Promote and advance environmental awareness to individuals and communities, both
locally and internationally
It has two Goals, which
include:
1. To provide every person with opportunities to acquire the knowledge, values,
attitudes, commitment and skills needed
to protect and improve
the
environment; and
2. To foster awareness and concern about environmental, social, political and
economical and political interdependence at local, regional, national and international
levels
The following 8 specific
objectives have been defined to achieve these goals:
1. To produce, develop and make available environmental related information
products
2. To establish strong national and regional networks to promote Environmental
Education
3. To promote the integrity and diversity of natural ecosystems
4. Build capacity among Namibian youths to start taking the lead in sustainable
environmental, social and economic upliftment
5. Share and develop skills for identifying, critically evaluating and solving
environmental problems
6. To support Namibia`s Environmental Education Policy and its
implementation
7. To use environmental education and communication to achieve the objectives
of
National
Environmental Policies, and
8. To promote the image of MET both internally and externally
EEIS Unit details:
The EEIS Unit is pro-active in providing purpose-oriented environmental
information to the various target groups, which include in order of
priority:
1. Farmers (communal and commercial)
2. Industrial Sector
3. Communities (Urban- rich and poor; Rural; Groups within- churches, women and
youths)
3. Primary and Secondary Schools (Teachers and learners)
4. Tertiary Students
5. Parliamentarians
6. Stakeholders (NGO, donors, private sector, municipality, parastatals, line
ministries)
7. Professionals
8. MET staff
The
EEIS Unit also coordinates the commemoration of national and international
environmental days. In addition, the Unit manages the Ministry’s Resource
Center in Windhoek, the MET website and the Ministry’s two Environmental
Education Centers, namely Namutoni EE Center in Etosha National Park and
Okatjikona EE Center in Waterberg Plateau Park.
