The policy of involving local communities in the management of
forest resources under the umbrella of community forestry
programme started in early 90’s but the Forest Act, Act no 12 of
2001 that makes provision for community forestry was only enacted
in December 2001.
So far 1,390,959 Ha of land are under community forestry
activities in both northeast and northwest regions. 29 sites are
involved in this noble task and 13 of them have already signed the
agreement with the Ministry.
