“Do the Parks need Condoms?”
Impact of HIV/AIDS on Park and Natural Resource Management
Does the HIV/AIDS pandemic impact the Protected Area system at institutional
and human capacity levels? Is there a need for succession planning to reduce
the impacts of HIV/AIDS on natural resource management? Do the Parks and
their neighbouring communities indeed need condoms and additional mitigation
measures and outreach services to improve natural resource management?
These and other questions will be answered at this 3rd ParkTalk; where
the findings and recommendations from the recently completed preliminary
HIV/AIDS-Environment status assessment will be presented by the HIV/AIDS-Environment
Working Group (HEWG).
The HEWG is a committee that comprises representation from the Ministry
of Health and Social Services, Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Namibia
Nature Foundation, United Nations Development Program, UNAIDS, and NACSO.
This working group has commissioned this study to address the links between
HIV/AIDS, the environment and natural resource management.
The ParkTalk series is part of the Strengthening the Protected Area Network
(SPAN) Project of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET), which aims
to improve the management of Namibia’s protected areas.
