The Directorate of Forestry under the
Ministry of Environment and Tourism in Namibia has a mission to carry out
forest resource assessments in Namibia. In this task the Government of
Finland has been supporting it since 1995.
The main objectives of an inventory is to:
1. Produce region-level forest resource data
on selected Namibian regions for
strategic planning
2. To produce more detailed forest data for
strategic or operational management
planning on sub-region
areas.
3. Build Namibian capacity to carry out
these inventories.
The utility of information from the
different levels of inventories differ. Region level inventories provide
information on forest resources for the entire region for region level
planning. But to get detailed information for operational management,
local level inventories have to be carried out. The sampling intensity in
local level inventories is much higher than that of region level
inventories.
