Environmental Events Calendar 2006

The
MET`s Environmental
Education and Information Service (EEIS) unit handles the comemmoration of environmentally-related events
and international days of observance and makes it appliccable
to our local circumstances in Namibia. During such events the
MET releases statements and advice to the Namibian people as
well as displays its latest information products.
ICEMA Project Office implementation plans for safeguard policies
(News
release: November 25, 2005)
The
World Bank has developed a number of Safeguards Operational
Policies (SOP`s) to ensure that all possible negative impacts
are considered and mitigation measures spelled out prior to
implementation of any proposed project. These policies ensure
that the quality of operations is uniform across different
settings worldwide. This brochure shows a brief elaboration
of SOP`s adopted by the MET as important to the ICEMA Project
and it implementation.
ParkTalk II: "What is the point of Rhino Management?"

Hosted
by the Strenghtening the Protected Area Network (SPAN) Project
of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, this talk and discussion
session will focus on the biological management of black rhino
in the Etosha National Park. The talk will be facilitated by
Mr. Pierre du Preez, Chief Conservation Scientist at the Directorate
of Scientific Services, MET. The venue is the Cinema room at
the Franco Namibian Cultural Centre, located at 118 Robert
Mugabe Avenue. To confirm the date and time, please contact

Third National Report to the CBD

Preparations
in the Global
Environment Facility (GEF) Proposal (facilitated by the World
Bank) are in its final phase for the establishment of a
new Project entitled: "Promoting Environmental Sustainability
for Improved Land Use Planning" on behalf of the MET and the
Ministry of Lands, Resettlement and Rehabilitation. This Project
is due to be officially established during the first half of
2006.

Project: Community Funding Facility Information Kit

ParkTalk: "Do the Parks need condoms?"

How
does the HIV/AIDS pandemic impact Namibia’s Parks and Natural
Resource Management system? At This third ParkTalk in the ParkTalk
series the findings and recommendations from the recently completed
preliminary HIV/AIDS-Environment status assessment will be
presented by the HIV/AIDS-Environment Working Group (HEWG).
The talk will be held on Monday, October 03 2005, at 18:00
at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC).
Inauguration of Namibia`s
first community-owned lodge

Namibia’s
first community-owned lodge, named Grootberg Lodge, was
inaugurated on 24 July 2005 by the Minister of Environment
and Tourism, Hon. Mr.
Willem Konjore.
#Khaodi //Hoas means "Elephant’s Corner". This conservancy
is situated 90km west of Kamanjab in the Kunene region and
was one of the first four
communal area conservancies to be gazetted by the MET in 1998.
This 12-room luxurious accommodation establishment was developed
through a funding partnership from
the European Union (EU) through the Namibia Tourism Development
Programme of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.

The
Namibia Tourism Development Programme (NTDP) of the Ministry
of Environment and Tourism, that was instated shortly after
independence and whose aim it was to support tourism development
in Namibia, has come to an end.
MET
quarterly newsletter
(News
release July 2005)
After
an absence of three years the quarterly newsletter of the MET
has been revived, this time under the name Earthbound. This
edition (May 2005) introduces you to the new MET Management
and the MET mandate and mission statements of its Directorates,
while tackling currents issues like human/wildlife conflict
and the 2005 hunting season. Earthbound is one of the Environmental
Education and Information Service unit`s efforts to promote
the image of the MET, both internally and externally.

The
tourism statistics for 2003 was compiled by the Directorate
of Tourism, showing comprehensive statistics of tourist arrivals
into Namibia, including nationality, purpose of visit, points
of entry, transportation used, types of accommodation preferred,
and many more. A good source of information for anyone interested
in the tourism industry of Namibia.

Production Programme: Stakeholder workshop on June 14, 2005

Hotel, Windhoek, on the 14th of June, 2005 to discuss

the recent five-day International Tourism Fair held in Berlin,
Germany, the Namibian tourism industry received praise for a
very positive participation during which the nation`s commitment
to the national and regional success of the industry was clear
to participants. Positive comments were also fuelled by the
presence of the Permanent Secretary of the MET, Dr. Malan
