Namibia, its wildlife, wild places and intriguing people, holds endless fascination for filmmakers and photographers.  As the custodian of the largest protected areas network in Africa, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) supports the work of recognized media organizations and individuals who shine a spotlight on the country’s wonders.  

To film, photography or create audio recordings in our parks and protect areas, the following permits are required:

Written permission must be obtained from the MET before the creation of visual, audio or audio-visual recordings and professional photography in the country’s parks.

Approved filmmakers/photographers must adhere to the rules and regulations of the parks, and if special consideration for a project is required (such as staying out after sunset/before sunrise), this permission should also be motivated for in advance.

Namibian Film Commission

Permission for any commercial filming or photography in Namibia must also be sought from the Namibia Film Commission. 

  • All applications carry a fee of N$ 500.00 (non-refundable)
  • Applications should reach the Namibian Film Commission’s offices three weeks before arrival.
  • All foreign crew/cast should have a valid temporary work visa (An
    application for visa form should be completed and forwarded to our offices within 14 days before departure). The cost for a three month visa amounts to N$ 390.00, whilst a six month visa amounts to N$ 780.00
  • All filming and professional photo shoots in National Parks require permission from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.
  • When filming or taking photographs of the Himba’s or San tribes, or any other minority groups should consult and obtain permission from the Legal Assistance Centre of Namibia.  Contact details of the Legal Assistance Centre of Namibia:  The Director, Legal Assistance Centre of Namibia, Tel: +264 61 223 356 or Fax: +264 61 234 953
  • Film production or photography companies should obtain an ATA carnet for their equipment before departure from country of residence.

Ministry of Home Affairs
   
All foreign crews working in Namibia must have a valid temporary work permit to work on a film set in Namibia, even if it is for only one day. Please apply to the Ministry of Home Affairs and allow ample time for this process. Work permits may also be obtained at the Namibian Embassy in your home country.
