Hunters

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism supports sustainable utilisation of wildlife resources, and one important economic component of this is trophy hunting.

Namibia’s hunting industry, which is monitored and regulated by the MET, has a sound international reputation for high ethical standards, for the great variety of huntable game on offer in Namibia.

Namibia’s Communal Conservancies are also actively involved in the hunting industry, receiving hunting quotas from the MET and engaging with professional hunters to optimize these opportunities.  (www.nacso.org.na)

The trophy hunting season begins each year on the 1st of February and ends on the 30th of November.

The MET also conducts written or oral examinations of hunting guides and professional hunters at predetermined times, does the practical testing within three months after the examination, acknowledges the professional bodies representing public game utilisation persons, and involves them in the activities of the Ministry through registration.

Permits & Registrations

Various permits for trophy hunting are required.  Permits are subject to the following conditions:

  • Permits may be issued by the MET only.
  • Permits must be issued prior to the hunting season.
  • A separate permit must be issued for each hunting client.
  • An additional permit, containing a list of special conditions, is required for large cats – leopard, lion and cheetah.
  • A permit has to be completed in full by the hunting client and the Namibian hunting professional (wounded and lost animals are to be stipulated in the permit too.)
  • A maximum of two trophies per species may be harvested per hunting client/per permit.
  • All trophy hunting operators have to be registered with the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB), the Namibian tourism authority governed by the MET.

Below you will find the pdf for an application to hunt trophies in Namibia.
Other hunting permits – including applications, invitations to hunt and those related to game dealing - are obtainable on the MET’s website – home page – permits.
