Game Capture

The game Capture Unit is based in Windhoek and is staffed by 1 Veterinarian, 2 Wardens, 2 Rangers, 1 Artisan, 4 Operator/drivers, 4 Scouts and 3 labourers. They provide a service to the Directorate Parks and Wildlife, and to other components of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism by caturing and translocating wildlife species of national importance in support of regional wildlife conservation priorities and the management of conservation areas.

Our commitment to you

The Game capture Unit is committed to provide a professional and efficient service.

The quality of service we can provide to you depends on various issues, including the input and cooperation we receive from you.
- Please communicate to us your identified caprute requirements for the forthcoming year by the end of November
- Base capture needs on real data rather than perceptions
- Indicate clearly where a survey mey be needed prior to capture
- Handle our staff members with the neccessary respect
- Inform us if you are not satisfied with our service

Services and performance standards

In response to identified needs, and in consultation with other components, we will:

- Develop an annual capture program to address as many of the priorities as possible
- Conduct all operations in a professional manner, in the best interest of the welfare of the animals being handled
- Strive for zero capture related mortalities, and in any event, keep these below 5%
- Maintain all equipment and infrastructure in an operational state
- Budget in a manner which will allow for optimal efficiency
- Respond to emergency needs promptly, and in the best interest of the animals involved
- Take full responsibility and accountability for capture operations
- Manage all personnel, stock and administrative matters according to set government procedures
- Provide expert professional advice concerning aspects of game capture and decisions concerning the management of wildlife populations in and outside protected areas within one week from receipt of request
- Submit a report on every operation within one month of completion, and a comprehensive annual report of activities for the previous capture season by the end of January each year.

The safety and well being of all animals we translocate is uppermost in our minds

Please bear in mind that our unit is out of the office conducting field operations during the capture season, from March to November.
