DIRECTORATE OF SCIENTIFIC SERVICES

About the Directorate of Scientific Services

As it’s name implies, the Directorate of Scientific Services (DSS) is the scientific branch of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and as such strives to support the decision making process which underlies the fulfillment of the Ministry’s mission – “…maintain and rehabilitate essential ecological processes and life-support systems, to conserve biological diversity and to ensure that the utilization of natural resources is sustainable for the benefit of all Namibians, both present and future, as well as for the international community”.

Our mission is to “Promote the maintenance and rehabilitation of essential ecological processes, life support systems and biological diversity, and the sustainable utilization of natural resources, by providing a scientific basis for an informed decision making process”.

The DSS was established as an independent directorate in 2000 to provide an institutional home for essential scientific services within the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.  Staffed by scientists drawn from a wide range of disciplines, the DSS provides technical information and support for conservation and resource management programs throughout Namibia, through:

  • Conducting and coordinating scientific wildlife research and monitoring.
  • Providing specialist technical and scientific advice regarding conservation and resource management issues.
  • Capturing and translocating wildlife in support of protected area management, biodiversity conservation and restoration, and expansion of the wildlife resource base for rural communities.
  • Coordinating and supporting national conservation and management programs for key species e.g. rhinoceros.
  • Coordinating and supporting the implementation of international agreements and conventions, e.g. the Convention on Wetlands.
  • Facilitating the sustainable utilization of wildlife resources.
  • Managing the national stocks of ivory and rhinoceros horn.
  • Serving as the national implementing body for CITES.
  • Promoting international market access for Namibian wildlife producers.
