Park Management
Park management is the largest function within the MET. More than 1 000 MET personnel are working in parks or in divisions that support park management and four existing directorates of the MET are physically present within the protected areas network. The DPWM is responsible for overall planning and management of Namibia’s protected areas.
Wardens manage most parks, with many Chief Wardens and Chief Control Wardens managing more than one park. The day-to-day work of park management differs from park to park. However, the following is a general list of management activities.
• Water provision to game
• Fence maintenance and repairs
• Game counts
• Law enforcement, ecological and incident monitoring in Parks
• Fire management
• Infrastructure development in Parks
• Participate in game capture and translocation of rare species and other wildlife in support of biodiversity conservation and the expansion of the wildlife resource base for rural communities
• Develop park related policies, management and tourism plans
• Coordinate the proclamation of conservation areas
• Manage trophy hunting and tourism concessions
• Provide game to conservancies and communities
