Environmental Impact Assessment, Pollution Control and Waste Management Unit

The Environmental Impact Assessment, Pollution Control and Waste Management Unit fulfils a crucial function of the Ministry by playing a central role in guiding sustainable development in Namibia. It ensures that the environmental impact of all proposed development projects, including mining activities and other initiatives, are assessed before the development can be approved. The Unit facilitates reviews of Environmental Impact Assessment reports and recommends whether environmental clearance certificates should be issued with or without conditions.

Additionally, the Unit is the focal point for the Basel Convention on the Control of Trans-boundary Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. The essence of these conventions is to protect human health and the environment from the adverse affects resulting from the generation, management, trans-boundary movements and disposal of hazardous and other wastes.
